St Lucia Marine Reserve

St Lucia Marine Reserve was declared a game reserve during 1897 and 1km around the lake was declared the St Lucia Park. St Lucia Marine Reserve was the first game reserve in South Africa.

It is a huge expanse of shallow lakes, pans and swamp forests stretching from Sodwana bay to Mapelane in the south. There are various different eco-systems.

It includes Lake St Lucia, St Lucia Marine Reserve and the wilderness area of Mfabeni and Tewati and Mkuze swamps.
