Sodwana Bay

It was during 1973 that Sodwana Bay become popular for fishermen and divers. It is now a renowned diver’s haven.

It provides scuba diving, snorkelling, fishing and deep sea diving. Visibility is hardly ever less than 15 metres and the water temperature never less than 19 degrees. Depths are from 12-18 metres with 30 and 50 metre sites for more qualified divers. Launches are through the surf, mostly on ski-boats.

The bay has sub-tropical weather with warm water all year round and beaches are safe for swimming and surfing.

There are some 1200 species of tropical fish, hard and soft coral, sponges, moray eels, large schools of pelagic fish, potato bass.

Sodwana Bay is the nesting site for Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles. Laying their eggs at night on the beach can be seen from November to January. Humpback Whales, Whale Sharks, Nurse Sharks and Manta Rays make seasonal visits. Marlin, Sailfish and Dolphins are seen all year round.

The bay is within the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park which has its own unique character and ecology. Crocodiles and Hippopotamus are found here.
